Dennis H. Sullivan Jr. grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina where he attended Millbrook High School. In 1990 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management form North Carolina State University. He received his Juris Doctorate from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
In 1994, Dennis joined the Law firm of Alexander M. Hall in Wilmington, North Carolina as an associate. In less than a year, he made partner when the firm evolved into Hall, Horne and Sullivan, LLP. He remained a partner in the firm until 2001, when he formed The Sullivan Law Firm, P.C.
Almost immediately upon arriving in Wilmington, Dennis assumed a leadership role in the county criminal defense bar. In 1995, he gathered the members of the bar together to form the The New Hanover Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He was the organization's first president, and served in that capacity for over ten years. His love of the courtroom also led him to handling personal injury and wrongful death cases. In addition to his trial practice, he is focused on helping families plan for life's challenges. Through Compass Legal Strategies (a division of Dennis Sullivan Law), he does estate planning and elder law.
Additionally, he is a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He served on the Board of Governors for the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers (now The North Carolina Advocates for Justice), and he served on the Executive Committee of the New Hanover County Bar Association for three years.
